When Capital University approached him to be interim president in 2020, David Kaufman couldn’t say no.

“I have always been impressed with the talent Capital produces, their focus on student success, and the inclusivity of the Lutheran faith,” Kaufman says. “It was an opportunity to serve by applying my executive experiences to the unique challenges facing higher education.”

The recently retired CEO of Encova Insurance had the leadership skills and business acumen to lead the private university with a storied 190-year history. Capital’s intimate size, robust academic programs, and student life position it as a unique player in the heart of Columbus, Ohio. After a year as interim, Kaufman recognized ways the university could innovate and be more responsive to the changing needs of business and society in general.
